A CEO, a consultant, and a data scientist walk into a boardroom.
The CEO says: "We need AI. Now."
The consultant says: "Absolutely. We'll start with a €500K pilot."
The data scientist says: "Do we have clean data?"
Silence.
The pilot launches anyway.
Six months later:
The CEO is at a conference talking about their "AI journey."
The consultant is on the next project.
The data scientist is still waiting for access to the database.
Meanwhile, in the same company:
The AI model trained on three-year-old Excel files is confidently recommending products they stopped selling in 2021.
The ethics policy is a Word document nobody has opened.
And the legacy system?
Still winning. Undefeated. Untouchable.
Joke?
Sure.
But also the real story of 70% of enterprise AI projects right now.
The punchline nobody wants to hear:
You can't scale what you haven't built.
Before the pilot – strategy. Before the strategy – awareness. Before awareness – humility.
And before humility?
Apparently, catering at a launch event. 🍕
There are 6 phases to actual AI maturity.
Most companies are somewhere between phase 1 and the press release announcing phase 6.
